Abadia de Poblet Winery
Abadia de Poblet, the only winery in Catalonia located within a historical monument, combines the winemaking tradition of the monks of the Cistercian Order, who come from Bourgogne, with the knowledge of the Conca de Barberà, a unique area that has managed to maintain the cultivation of native varietals. The Abadia de Poblet winery was born out of the desire of the old Cistercian community to return to the winemaking tradition of this territory. The monks of Poblet were the ones who in the 16th century brought from Bourgogne the knowledge of winemaking. In 1989, the Codorníu Group decided to join this project, which began with the planting of vineyards on the 9 hectares within the walled enclosure of the Poblet Monastery. At the same time, an in-depth rehabilitation of the building began, which was built in 1870 and which would serve to centralise all the agricultural activity on the estate.
In the year 2000, with the vineyard already grown, the winery was built next to the monastery, which from then on would produce the wines of the Poblet estate. In the spring of 2002 the first Abbey of Poblet was presented. The philosophy behind the new monastery wines, which recovered local varieties (mainly Trepat, Garrut and Garnatxa), was to transmit the characteristics of the grapes used to make them and the terroir in which they were grown. This is achieved by working in a non-invasive way and recovering the winemaking techniques of the monks of the Cistercian Order.
This selection of wines is made in on-site presses - instead of today's modern stainless steel containers - without adding any industrial yeast and aged in old casks with a capacity of almost 5,000 litres.
In a very short time, Abadia de Poblet has become one of the leading wineries in the production of wine using Trepat, the native and most emblematic variety of the Conca de Barberá D.O.In 2017 the prestigious publication Robert Parker praised 'La Font Voltada', its best wine made solely from Trepat, with 92+ Parker points.
