Pere Olivella Galimany Winery
The vineyard, our particular heritage
The Can Pere del Maset estate is strategically located in a unique, magical and special place, right in the heart of the Alt Penedès wine region.
The Masia and the winery are located on top of a hill, over 300 m above sea level, where at its feet a sea of vines, olive trees, forests of Aleppo pines and holm oaks opens up majestically, forming a typically Mediterranean landscape.
Our most precious heritage, twenty-two hectares of vineyards, some with vines over 70 years old; old vines planted with goblet and which are still conserved because from them we obtain some clusters that transmit the essence of our land and unique personality to our wines.
The climate, typically Mediterranean
The climate on the Can Pere del Maset estate is typically Mediterranean, mild and warm, typical of the Catalan pre-coastal area, moderately cold winters with hot, dry summers.
A privileged situation of a region, the Alt Penedès, which looks out to sea to shelter from the cold north winds, protected by the Font-rubí mountain range in the west, the imposing magical and sacred mountain of Montserrat in the north and the coastal mountain range in the east, favouring an ideal climate for the perfect development of the vine's vegetative cycle, with thermal contrast between day and night, to achieve a good phenolic ripening of the grapes.
In our estate the average temperature is 12 °C, a favourable temperature for the cultivation of the vine, with minimums around 1 °C in the month of January and maximums around 28 °C in the month of July.
Frosts usually occur between the beginning of November and the end of April, the latter being the most feared and dangerous.
An average rainfall of between 500-520 l/m², although there are vintages in which it has been possible to reach 900 l/m². The autumn followed by the spring are the seasons when maximum rainfall is achieved.
The climate of our Penedès is luminous, the average number of hours is 2548, favourable for the good maturation of the grape.
The ground, the perfect ally
The Can Pere del Maset farmhouse and the winery and part of the estate are located on a bank of alluvial fans that were active during the Miocene period, originally from the pre-coastal mountain range. The dominant materials in the composition of this soil are clays, compact clays, stoneware and conglomerates that are 12 million years old.
The geological origin of the soil on our estate where the vineyards and olive trees are planted dates back to the beginning of the Quaternary (Pleistocene), more than 2.5 million years ago.
A soil basically formed by ancient alluvial fans, in this period the sea that covered the entire Iberian Peninsula practically withdrew, leaving different types of soil uncovered. Vines with exceptional soil, shallow and poor soils with organic matter, texture formed by clays and large amounts of lime, factors that limit our production but give the wines freshness, acidity and aging potential.
